Hosts U-19 Vietnam beat U-21 Thailand 2-1 in the Sunday’s final game of the Thanh Nien newspaper-sponsored International U-21 Football Tournament to crown the title and pocket a cash prize of US$25,400.
Striker Hai Huy scored both goals in the 8th and 79th minutes of the game held on Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City. Akarapol Meesawad of Thailand shortened the score with a goal in the 68th minute.
Goalkeeper Buu Ngoc of Vietnam produced a trademark performance at the game with many brave dives to save ball under control of rivals, and had to leave the field ten minutes before the referee’s final whistle after a collision in his box.
Captain Nguyen Van Quyet of Vietnam was awarded the Best Player title.
In the third/fourth match, U-21 Vietnam edged U-21 Malaysia 1-0 to win bronze medal.
The Thanh Nien-sponsored International U-21 Football Tournament has 6 teams partaking, U-21 Singapore and U-21 Myanmar eliminated in the semis.
The international edition is the second phase of the Vietnam’s National U-21 Football Championship, which is held annually. This year, Dong Nai crowned the title for the first time after surpassing Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) 8-7 on penalty shootout in the final game on October 17 in the central highlands province of Gia Lai.
