One of the more unusual looking buildings in the world that is under construction right now is the 201 Tower in the People's Republic of China.
With 37 floors and 35,186 square metres of floor space the building rises 201 metres in height above the Chinese city of Guiyang, a rapidly growing area with 4 million people in the southern part of the country.
What makes the building unusual is the structure. The central core is a structural steel shaft, and from this ten glazed blocks will hang off it to serve as different office modules each connected to the central core. This makes it a rapid structure to construct and avoids the need for heavy foundations whilst at the same time sparing a substantial amount of building material.
Indeed, so quickly can a pre-fabricated structure of this nature be built and fitted out that it is perfectly possible to complete such a tower in a year.
In the case of the 201 Tower, although the skyscraper can be completed relatively quickly, it is part of a larger mixed-use scheme that includes an auditorium, leisure facilities, retail outlets, and landscaped gardens.
