A 34th minute classic strike by Louis Agyeman on Sunday powered Kumasi Asante Kotoko to record a vital 1-0 win over Ashantigold in the 4th week Glo Premier League encounter played at the Len Clay Sports Stadium at Obuasi.
Louis Agyeman, who has hit an impressive form lately, received a perfect pass from Alex Asamoah half way inside Ashantigold’s territory. Realising that goalkeeper Isaac Akrong was way off his line, the Kotoko striker intelligently delivered stunning, 30-metre shot which zoomed straight into the net to send the dominant Kotoko fans into ecstatic mood while supporters of the home team staying glued to their seats, completely astonished and cursing their trusted goalkeeper for an obvious unpardonable mistake.
The heartbroken Ashantigold supporters simply refused to give credit to Louis Agyeman for his mature and startling delivery but the cheering Kotoko fans including the various radio commentators at the stadium could not help than heap tons of praise on the Louis Agyeman for his extraordinary finishing.
The goal was a perfect icing on the cake for Kotoko who from the start of the game gave clear indications of bagging the three maximum points.
The exchanges between the two sides in the first quarter of the game were brilliant. Kotoko’s midfield quartet comprising Nii Adjei, David Ofei, Jordan Opoku and Harif Mohammed strung very decent passes and effectively supported the combined attack of Alex Asamoah and Louis Agyeman.
The Kotoko attack was just unlucky to draw early blood in the 16th minute when Alex Asamoah sent a faultless cross deep inside Ashantigold’s goal area. However, onrushing Louis Agyeman failed to get his long stretched foot to the ball to connect home.
Ashantigold’s effort upfront was also near to perfection. They could have indeed shot into the lead but for the fantastic and uncompromising challenge, robust defenders, John Kuffour and Henry Ohene Brenya offered them.
On countless occasions John Kuffour and Ohene Brenya neutralise and overpowered the home team’s striking force, soaking the intense pressure piled on Kotoko especially in the second half of the game where the Miners largely dominated play.
The awesome and unyielding control of affairs in defence by John Kuffour and his partner in effect crushed Ashantigold’s dream of fetching the equaliser despite coming particularly close sometimes.
With defeat painfully starring Ashantigold in the face, desperate Coach David Duncan pulled out Jonas Frimpah, Aminu Mohammed and Edmund Owusu Peprah for Addoquaye Addo, Malik Akowuah and Yakubu Mohammed respectively.
This was to fortify his attack and though Ashantigold threw all their men forward late into the game, their search for the equaliser was thwarted by goalkeeper Isaac Amoako who made a series of fabulous saves.
An excruciating home defeat seemed inevitable when the 90 minutes elapsed.
Referee Cecil Fletcher signaled the fourth referee to show four minutes as the time added on. Interestingly however, the fourth referee was reluctant to pick his board to display the time. It took protest from the Kotoko bench for him to show the four minutes of time added on in the 93rd minute.
When the final whistle went, the huge Kotoko crowd gave their team a massive standing ovation, commending them for their relentless show of strength and excellent performance in that crunch game.
As the desolate Ashgold players and members of their technical team left for the changing room, a visibly dejected Coach Duncan remained glued to his seat for minutes obviously mourning his side’s death at home.
